Be the professor

Hello my name is professor Lea. I will be teaching you about pie charts in relation to percentages. Pie charts are important to understand because they are used in our lives daily to represent certain values out of 100. Pie charts a good way to visually show percentages therefore better understand them. For example, below I have attached a photo of a pie chart.
This is meant to represent the contents of the song Macarena. The red portion shows the part of the song that the audience can understand and the blue is meant to represent the part of the song that is a mystery to us all. As you can see there is a significantly larger portion of the chart that is blue. From this we can assume that the only part of the song that is clear is a small portion.
This pie chart is meant to be funny, however Pie charts are also used to relay important information. Below I have attached a chart of the religions in the US along with the percentages associated with each religion.
As you can see the dominant religion is Protestant, which is shown in blue. The blue section is clearly the larges section and takes up a little more than half of the chart. When only looking at the chart we can see the Jewish population shown in light blue is a lot smaller than many of the other sections. Without knowing the numbers we can already tell there are less Jews in the US than many other religions.
If we were to convert these percentages to numbers we would put the percentages in fraction form, making the numerator the number shown as a percentage and the denominator 100. Then by doing some research we would have to find the population of the United States. By  putting this number in the denominator and cross multiplying the percentage we would then find the number of people who identify with each religion.

  1. Your lesson was really good, and the first pie chart you used of the lyrics to Macarena was funny. This was also a good example to use as an introduction because this is a very well known song most people have heard before. The next example was more complicated but still easy to follow. Well done!

  3. Haha great examples. Love the macarena one. Your visuals were awesome. I agree pie charts are a good way to understand percents of 100.

  4. lea,

i liked your example using the macarena. it IS a mystery, isn't it? haha

i like the concept of your lesson, however, i would included some kind of portion where you show how to create a pie chart. i feel like this is a really great motivational/introduction to a lesson. otherwise, good job.
