Eric Lieberman- Bar Graphs Lesson

Hello Students my name is Eric Lieberman, and today I will be teaching you about Bar Graphs. When your done with this lesson you should be able to create your very own bar graph!
Firstly I will give you the definition of a Bar Graph which is a diagram in which the numerical values of variables are represented by the height of lines or rectangles!
This is what a bar graph looks like!

Any questions? I have an answer for a question that many of you may be wondering. When do we use bar graphs? We use bar graphs when we have two or more independent variables. So for example you can make a bar graph when you are comparing test scores for a class.
Here is an example using test scores for a class.
78, 75, 84, 89, 84, 91, 89, 98, 75, 80, 89, 90
So whats next?
1. You would then write out the x and y axis as two perpendicular lines. The x axis you write as horizontal and the y axis you write as vertical.
2. You will then label both of the axis. In this situation you would label the y axis number of students and the x axis as test scores ranging.
3. Next you will create bars for each test score that was listed. The first bar will go to the right of zero at the x axis. You will then draw a bar for each score going along the x axis.
4. After that you will mark how many students got those test scores, so if two students got a 91, then you will draw your bar up to where the y axis marks 2.
5. Then you will shade in each of the bars a different color so it is easy to tell the difference between them.
6. Label your graph, in this case it would be labeled as students test scores.

This is what your graph should look like. This graph has a color key instead of listed at the bottom of the x axis. It can be done either way.

Bar graphs are extremely important for math and for the rest of your life in anything you do, this is why I chose bar graphs as my topic to teach, because I feel it is one of the only math equation that is useful out of schooling. This can be used to help visual learners who have a tough time looking at numbers, instead this lists out all of your data color coded and is easier and more appealing to look at. Bar graphs are extremely useful when looking at a lot of data!

  1. hi,eric,

nice job on the lesson! i really like the graphics and especially the key color code for the data. it was great having you in class. good luck with everything!
