Blog Post 2 - Believe it or not

1. Statement: Good grades, cash rewards.

2. Statement in premise/conclusion format: with good grades you get cash rewards. I have good grades. I get cash rewards.

3.

4. In this case, the argument is valid and sound. I have good grades; therefore the bank will give me cash rewards.

5. Conditional statement: If I get good grades, I’ll get cash rewards.

6. It is not a tautology because people don’t always get cash rewards; it makes sense in real life because it depends on the grades.

7. The advertisement I analyzed was from Discover Bank and it was published in the September’s edition of Forbes magazine. It looks real and it also includes contact information, like the website and phone numbers. I also think the argument makes sense and that it’s a reasonable idea.

8. It’s not a fallacy.

9. This experiment did help me think more critically about media information because we are surrounded by it in today’s society, Analyzing the information that’s presented to us is important because that way we can make better decisions when it comes to the services and products that advertisements are trying to sell.

  1. I liked the ad that you chose, it was original and not such a commonly seen ad. I think everything you said was correct and you explained it well. I liked your answer to number 9 because it's true, we do need to be more critical about media information we are constantly surrounded by and analyze that information to better understand it and make decisions. good job!

  2. Interesting argument! I totally agree with your answer to number 9, its so fascinating how much media has an influence has an influence on our society! Nice point too that just because it isn't true mathematically doesn't negate it being true in real life!

  3. This ad seems pretty straightforward which, like you said in #9, isn't always what most ads aim to do. I do wonder if there was a fine print disclaimer with extra conditions to getting the cash, which would complicate the argument. Good job!

  4. Interesting topic, I never really thought about the potential cash rewards I can get from getting good grades and how that can also help me pay for college.

  7. lorena,

you did a really nice job on this blog entry! i like how you explained the experiment in good detail. also, you are so right about we should really think so that we make better decisions about things we purchase. there are a few columns missing from your truth table, so, i'm not sure if the final result is accurate. but other than that, good job. =]
